Objectives and professional opportunities

Why this PhD?
The PhD Programme in Aerospace Engineering and Sciences, jointly offered by the Polytechnic University of Bari (PoliBA) and the University of Bari (UniBA), provides advanced interdisciplinary training in a field where fundamental sciences, information technologies, and engineering disciplines are deeply interconnected.
The programme brings together expertise in mathematics and computer science, physics, chemistry, industrial engineering, and information engineering, involving multiple departments across the two institutions. This integrated approach enables doctoral candidates to address complex aerospace systems characterized by strong interactions among scientific, technological, economic, and societal dimensions.
Students benefit from a dynamic research environment, with faculty actively engaged in national and international projects and collaborations with leading universities, research centres, and industry partners. Opportunities for international mobility, joint research, and co-supervised theses are an integral part of the programme.
Strong links with industry and innovation ecosystems—supported by initiatives such as the Boosting Innovation in Poliba (BINP) incubator, public–private laboratories, and regional research networks—enhance the programme’s impact. The collaboration with ESA_Lab@PoliBa further strengthens connections with the European Space Agency and the emerging space economy. A dedicated Board of Advisors ensures continuous alignment with scientific and professional developments.

Training and Research
The programme combines advanced coursework and research activities, with personalized study plans tailored to each doctoral candidate. Students acquire a solid interdisciplinary background while developing specialized expertise in their research area.
Training and research are structured around three main domains:
Aerospace Engineering: structures, fluid dynamics, flight mechanics, propulsion, advanced design, testing, and lifecycle management of aerospace systems;
Aerospace Systems: information technologies for aerospace applications, including communication systems, remote sensing, control and robotics, data processing, and artificial intelligence;
Aerospace Sciences: topics such as radiation physics, Earth observation, advanced materials, plasma physics, space biomedicine, and space economy.
The programme aims to train highly qualified researchers capable of conducting innovative research and addressing frontier challenges, supported by advanced numerical and experimental methodologies. International research experience is strongly encouraged as part of the doctoral path.

Career Opportunities
The interdisciplinary nature of the programme ensures a wide range of career opportunities in both academia and industry, in Italy and abroad.
Graduates are prepared for roles such as researchers in universities and research centres, highly qualified technical specialists, and technical managers in industry and public institutions. Career paths extend beyond the aerospace sector to include robotics, transportation, automotive, mechatronics, energy, telecommunications, and advanced data systems.
Employment opportunities mainly involve research and development, design, production, and innovation management, as well as advanced service sectors related to complex systems. The programme also supports career development beyond academia through dedicated initiatives in collaboration with institutional placement services and industry partners.
Recent data highlight the strong employability of PhD graduates, with high employment rates within one year of completion and rapid transition into the labour market. The programme responds to the growing demand for professionals with interdisciplinary and transversal skills, capable of supporting and managing innovation in complex technological environments.
